Betty Shepherd, established Cyber, Security & Privacy expert, has joined S. H. Smith & Company's Professional & Management Liability Department as Vice President.

Betty has two decades of underwriting experience, with an emphasis on Cyber, Security & Privacy Liability. Betty comes to us from RLI Insurance Company, where she served as Assistant Vice President and developed and launched RLI's CyberSecure policy. Prior to RLI, Betty held the positions of Assistant Vice President at Arch Insurance Group and Underwriting Specialist at Zurich North America.

On September 23, the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee approved three data breach bills:

The Personal Data Privacy and Security Act of 2011

This bill establishes a national standard for data breach notification and require businesses that collect and store consumers' sensitive personal information to establish and implement data privacy and security programs to prevent breaches from occurring. The bill also includes criminal penalties for anyone who intentionally and willfully conceals the fact that a data breach has occurred.

The Personal Data Protection and Breach Accountability Act of 2011

This act was formed to help companies establish minimum security standards to safeguard sensitive consumer information and require companies to notify individuals promptly after a data breach has occurred.

Data Breach Notification Act of 2011

This recently approved bill requires federal agencies and those engaged in interstate commerce who possess data containing sensitive personally identifiable information to disclose the breach of such information.
